A Study of Labour Unionism and Economic Growth in Nigeria (1975-2004)

Abstract

This research work provides some review of unionism in Nigeria within the period of 1975 and 2004. Using regression analysis, a good explanatory variable was identified that explains economic condition which is reflected in the cost of living (which in the study is proxied by the rate of inflation) and nominal wage. The impact of unionism was negative and the study recommends that labour unions in Nigeria should not be looked upon as agent of destabilization rather government and employers of labour should pursue policies in consonance with the changing economic condition which arise from within and outside the economy.
