Abstract: A study on the parity rate of indoor-resting Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes and their implication in &#xD;
disease transmission was carried out in Nnamdi Azikiwe University female hostel between June and July 2016. The mosquitoes were sampled weekly from 24 randomly selected rooms using pyrethrum knock-down collection (P.K.C). A total of 516 mosquitoes comprising of 4 species: Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles funestus, Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex annulioris, were collected during the study period.  The mosquitoes were examined for their abdominal gradings/gonotrophic stages and dissected for parity determination. Culex quinquefasciatus (61.43%) constituted the most abundant species followed by Anopheles gambiae &#xD;
(30.04%) and Anopheles funestus (7.56%) and the least being Culex annulioris (0.97%). Results showed that &#xD;
majority of the vector species were fed and parous and variations among the parity rates of the 4 species was &#xD;
significant (P &lt;0.05). The high rate of the fed and parous mosquito species is of utmost concern in the hostel &#xD;
environment and therefore control measures aimed at eliminating the breeding sites and reducing its contact with the students should be embraced and practiced so as to minimize disease transmission among the students.

Abstract: Mosquitoes vectors transmit diseases of public health importance such as Dengue &#xD;
fever, Zika virus disease, malaria, lymphatic filariasis, yellow fever, west nile fever &#xD;
and chikungunya. Mosquito distribution significantly influences disease transmission &#xD;
risks. This study investigated the species composition and relative abundance of &#xD;
mosquitoes vector species in two selected villages in Ndufu-Echara, Ikwo LGA, from&#xD;
June to August 2025, to understand their distribution pattern and potential influence &#xD;
on disease transmission. Mosquitoes were collected using two standard methods: the &#xD;
Human Landing Catch (HLC) for outdoor sampling and the Pyrethrum Knockdown &#xD;
Catch (PKC) for indoor sampling. A total of 342 mosquitoes representing three &#xD;
genera and five species—Anopheles gambiae, Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes &#xD;
vittatus, Aedes aegypti, and Aedes albopictus—were identified from two study sites. &#xD;
Culex quinquefasciatus had the highest relative abundance (40.34%) in Site 1, while &#xD;
Aedes vittatus showed the lowest (1.73%) in Site 2. Overall, 333 mosquitoes were &#xD;
collected across both methods, with 189 (97.36%) obtained via PKC and 144 &#xD;
(107.46%) via HLC. Aedes aegypti (20.89%) and Anopheles funestus (8.21%) were &#xD;
more abundant in HLC collections, while Aedes albopictus (14.29%) dominated PKC &#xD;
catches. Culex quinquefasciatus was also more frequent in HLC (43.28%) than PKC &#xD;
(28.59%). Diversity analyses revealed that Site 2 exhibited a slightly higher &#xD;
Shannon–Wiener diversity index (1.63) and evenness (0.91) than Site 1 (1.62 and &#xD;
0.90, respectively). Margalef richness was higher in Site 2 (1.03) than Site 1 (1.02), &#xD;
while Simpson’s dominance index was greater in Site 1 (0.26) than Site 2 (0.23). &#xD;
There was significant difference in the populations of different species of mosquitoes &#xD;
collected with PKC and HLC collection method at (P = 0.001). These findings &#xD;
demonstrate spatial variations in mosquito distribution to prevent disease outbreaks &#xD;
in the area.

Abstract: A prevalence study of Trichomonas vaginalis infection among the rural women of Ekwulumili community in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria, was carried out between April and July 2012.&#xD;
A total of one hundred women aged 20-59 years, from the four villages of the community participated in the study.The women were mobilized through advocacy visits to the traditional ruler and opinion leaders of the community, town criers and announcements in the churches, schools, markets and women group meetings. All the women were assembled at the Eziokwubundu Maternity Home on the agreed date. An informed consent of every woman was obtained before a sample of the vaginal swab was carefully and asceptically collected from the high vaginal area using a well-labeled, sterile, non-abrassive high vaginal swab stick. Each sample was stored in a test tube containing 5mls of phosphate buffer. All samples were centrifuged and examined microscopically within 2 hours of collection. The presence of T. vaginalis was detected by its characteristic jerky movement in a wet preparation. An overall prevalence of 15% was obtained. T. vaginalis prevalence varied in the villages, being highest in Owellechukwu 1(25.0%) and least in Urueze 9(13.24%). It also varied with marital groups, being highest among the married women 9(20.93%) and lowest among the singles 3(8.82%). It was highest among the traders 10(23.81%) and lowest among the civil servants 1(9.10%). Among the age groups, prevalence was highest in the age group 30-39 years, 7(35.0%) and lowest among those aged 40-49 years, 2(8.0%). T vaginalis was not detected in pregnant women. Adequate personal hygiene, avoidance of promiscuity, faithfulness to one sexual partner, and health education were suggested for improvement of their health.
